Dr. Arnold’s professional interests include applied microbiology (bioremediation and microbially catalyzed processes of environmental interest) and abiotic catalysis of hazardous waste transformations. He has participated in research aimed at the treatment of hazardous organic pollutants such as chlorinated solvents, wastewater polishing during infiltration through biologically active soils, microbial transport through porous media, and prevention of sewer crown corrosion. Examples of his work in abiotic catalysis include the electrolytic and photoinitiated decomposition of trichloroethylene.

Dr. Arnold was a Presidential Young Investigator and a co-recipient of the Mees Award for outstanding water-related environmental research in the State of Arizona.
